Ellis Hospital

About Ellis Hospital

Ellis Hospital is a not-for-profit community hospital founded in 1885. In this pivotal year more than a century ago, the Schenectady Free Dispensary, which was the forerunner to Ellis Hospital, was established in response to the growing need and demand for a hospital. The five-bed ward was the city’s first medical facility, and it marked the beginning of what has become a time honored tradition of a hospital and community working in tandem to make health care an enduring priority.

Today, Ellis extends its reach beyond the city and into a much wider region, serving patients from surrounding counties. Ellis provides medical/surgical, emergency, psychiatric and obstetric/gynecological care, primary care, long term care and outpatient services. Ellis’ specialty services include a stroke center, a bariatric care center, and a heart center, which provides cardiac catheterization, angioplasty and cardiac surgery. Ellis is also the sponsor of reputable School of Nursing, Family Medicine Residency and Dental Residency programs.

At Ellis, you will find state-of-the-art technology and advanced medical procedures, as well as the traditional art of caring and a firm commitment to the quality of care each patient receives.

Ellis is proud to have recently assumed responsibility for the programs and services previously provided by the former St. Clare’s Hospital and Bellevue Woman’s Hospital. Schenectady’s three leading health care traditions are now joined as a singled, stronger organization.
