Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit
Ellis
Medicine's Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU) is part of a
20-bed Neuroscience Transitional Care Unit located on the 6th floor,
C-wing of Ellis Hospital. The Transitional Care Unit includes eight
dedicated Neuro ICU beds and two Epilepsy Monitoring beds.
The Neuro ICU delivers comprehensive care to patients with
neurological conditions such as:
- Brain, head or spinal cord injuries
- Brain infections (e.g., encephalitis and meningitis)
- Brain tumors
- Epilepsy and other seizure disorders
- Nerve and muscular disorders
- Migraine and headaches
- Stroke
These neurological conditions, many of which are disabling or
life-threatening, require constant, thorough and carefully
coordinated care.
At work in Ellis' Neuro ICU is a multidisciplinary team of
specialists consisting of neurologists, neurosurgeons, nurses
specially trained in neuroscience intensive care, radiologists,
neuroscience physician assistants, rehabilitation professionals,
among many others. Our neuro nurses actively participate in
certification programs to enhance the quality of care provided
on the unit.
Our team of specialists gathers together at least once a day
- or more often as necessary - to discuss their patients' care.
The effective collaboration and communication among these
specialists is one of the reasons why Ellis' neuroscience
program is a national model of care for the treatment of brain,
spine and nerve disorders.
A neuro patient's vital signs, speech and eye responses are
continually evaluated. The around-the-clock, personalized care
of our patients is supported by advanced technology, monitoring
and treatments, including EEG monitoring and intracranial
pressure monitoring.
Additionally, the Neuro ICU utilizes advanced fall prevention
strategies, strictly adheres to infection control protocols, and
also employs pressure ulcer prevention strategies to keep
patients safe and well cared for.
The high quality of care delivered in the Neuro ICU helps
ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients. And while
the road to recovery for many or our patients can be long and
challenging, the care they receive in the Neuro ICU can give
them the strength, stability and support they need to move
forward on their path to recuperation.
