Medical Imaging - Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Ellis
Medicine offers advanced MRI services at Ellis Hospital and Ellis
Health Center. Our MRI capabilities are among the fastest and most
powerful in the Capital Region.
What is MRI
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and is a painless method
for taking pictures inside the body. MRI uses a large magnet, radio
waves and a computer to scan your body and produce detailed pictures
(two- or three-dimensional pictures) for diagnostic purposes. In many
cases, MR images replace the need for x-rays, hospitalization and
exploratory surgery.
The MRI Exam
The MRI exam is simple and painless. The patient lies on a cushioned
table that slides into the tubular magnetic unit (see picture above). It
is important that the patient remains perfectly still during the exam to
prevent the images from blurring. A technologist monitors the exam from
outside the exam room during the entire procedure. For your increased
comfort, our MRI even has a sound system that enables patients to relax
to music during a scan.
Ellis Medicine has MRI-certified technologists, and all scans are
read by radiologists who are board-certified in subspecialties of
radiology specific to various body systems, such as neuroradiology.
Advanced Technology
The MRI at Ellis Hospital was the first scanner in the Capital Region
capable of echoplanar diffusion imaging of the brain. Echoplanar
diffusion imaging allows doctors to quickly and accurately assess
patients with early symptoms of stroke, opening the possibility of
extending the use and safety of the new stroke treatments. These
treatments can increase the chances of precious brain tissue being
saved, reducing the severity of a stroke's long-term effects.
